Adult Entertainment occupies a very lucrative market share in terms of videos, magazines, as well as internet pay sites. This is no different in Japan, where the adult industry make big bucks as convenience stores and video rental stores are flooded with a seemingly endless array of choices for adult viewing pleasure. However, unlike in most other countries, the female stars featured in movies in Japan receive mainstream acceptance as the use their naughtier features as a springboard into conventional TV shows, movies, and modeling contracts. What gives? Where there used to be a stigma attached to working in the Adult Video industry, that has largely faded away as Japanese AV stars make respectable careers out of what was a career that most people would consider decidedly unrespectable. What is it about Japan, or about these girls, that makes this a reality in that country? An AV girl doesn't have anything super human about her, and is certainly not serving a higher cause with her work. Why then is the Japanese AV girl receiving such benefits?
It must have something to do with the culture. Japan is known to be a sexually repressed country, but this doesn't mean that people don't think about it. I think a more accurate statement would be that Japanese people don't have that much actual intercourse, and at the same time they don't have the typical western hangups about sex. This creates an environment full of people with unsatisfied urges, and they turn to adult media to satisfy these urges. It's too difficult for people to meet members of the opposite sex otherwise. There was a time when marriages would have been arranged, but that time is long gone with nothing to replace it. In modern Japan, there are few places for adult men and women to interact. The workplace is one of the few, and you can't very well meet many eligible partners in the typical workplace, now can you? I think it's this dynamic of lonely people with natural urges that has allowed the adult film industry in Japan to flourish, and it's gotten to the point where the industry seems to be more or less mainstream.
In my opinion, this does not bode well for society. I'm all for sexual freedoms and such, but to me it seems wrong to embrace adult videos and the people who make them as welcome additions to popular culture. I don't want my kids to follow in the footsteps of Japanese AV girls, and that's what might happen if the career path of the AV girl becomes some kind of "norm" that people seek to emulate. Hopefully the adage that 'what goes up, must come down' will be true in this situation and the rise of the AV girl will be but a passing trend in one country of the world.
